Overcoming a fear of heights

Warning: more vacation photos

I'm pretty much a chicken when it comes to heights. So, what do I do on vacation? Confront it head-on!
Nervously navigating a ladder at Badlands National Park.

Wondering what holds up this roadway at Yellowstone.

Getting ready to ride elevator to top of Seattle Space Needle and wondering if there were any bathrooms at the top (there were).

Taking a tour of the Grand Coulee Dam. You get in an elevator car and descend down this track to access various areas within the structure. The elevator car had glass sides so you could appreciate how far you would fall if there was a mechanical failrue. The tour guide cheerfully noted that all parts and labor for the elevator were provided by the lowest bidders.

Someone other than me para-sailing over the Puget Sound at Seattle. Now, that's just plain crazy.

  • Cool! I've been up the Niagara Falls needle, and the CN tower in Toronto, but the Seattle Space Needle is next on my far in the future list. That's a really good photo looking down at you in the Badlands.

They still allow tours of the Grand Coulee Dam? All the dam tours in this state were shut down due to 9/11. They've even re-routed several roads that went over or along dams.

  • The Grand Coulee Dam had security beyond even what one would expect in an airport...you could not even take your purse into the Visitor Center, which was physically removed from the dam. And the drive across the top has been shut down permanently. I thought of you when they said much of the power generated went to California. They were running at full generating capacity the day we were there and the room with the turbines was rumbling from the force of the water beneath our feet.
